US employers add a surprisingly strong 216,000 jobs in a sign of continued economic strength

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s employers added a robust 216,000 jobs last month, the latest sign that the American job market remains resilient even in the face of sharply higher interest rates.Friday’s report from the Labor Department showed that December’s job gain exceeded the 173,000 that were added in November. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7% — the 23rd straight month that joblessness has remained below 4%.The latest data reflect an economy and a job market that are decelerating back to pre-pandemic norms. Hiring remains steady, and while employers are posting fewer openings, they are not laying off many workers.Despite the low unemployment and cooling inflation, polls show that many Americans are dissatisfied with the economy. That disconnect, which will likely be an issue in the 2024 elections, has puzzled economists and political analysts.A key factor, though, is the public’s exasperation with higher prices. Though inflation has been falling more or less steadily...More than 50 cars stolen in DC in first few days of 2024, police says

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s Democratic governor opposes keeping Republican Donald Trump off the ballot in the battleground state, saying that those who think he should be disqualified “can vote against him.”Gov. Tony Evers also told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday that in order for President Joe Biden to win Wisconsin, he must be a frequent visitor to the state and focus his message on his successes and issues that matter to the middle class, not just the argument that the fate of democracy is at stake.Evers’ comments come ahead of a visit to Wisconsin later this month by Vice President Kamala Harris and ahead of the planned filing Friday of a lawsuit by a Democratic activist aimed at keeping Trump off the ballot, arguing that his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot amounted to unconstitutional insurrection.Officials in Colorado and Maine have already banned Trump’s name from primary election ballots. Trump asked the U.S. Supreme Court ...US employers added a surprisingly strong 216,000 jobs in December in a sign of continued economic strength

Wall Street edged lower Friday ahead of the release of the December jobs report, which is expected to show that the labor market remained sturdy in the final month of 2023.Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were each down 0.3% before the bell.Economists expect the jobs report to show U.S. hiring slowed to 160,000 jobs last month from 199,000 in November, though the latter number was slightly inflated by the return of thousands of auto workers and actors who had been on strike. The hope is that the economy will remain just strong enough to stave off recession without reversing progress in taming inflation. The Federal Reserve is watching to see if current trends continue as it weighs the possibility of cutting interest rates. The latest inflation data from the consumer and wholesale levels are due out next week.Rate cuts give a boost to prices for stocks and other investments, while also relaxing the pressure on the economy and financial system.
