Best of 60 field hockey: A fitting send-off for state’s top seniors BOLTON – The field hockey season and its seniors’ high school careers came to an official close Sunday morning at Nashoba, but not without one last reminder of what the sport is losing from the state’s top graduating players. The two Massachusetts State Field Hockey Coaches Association Best of 60 Senior All-Star Games showed plenty of offensive firepower and defensive execution in a final hoorah, with Team Dark Green beating Team Neon Orange 5-2, and Team Neon Green playing Team Navy to a 1-1 tie.The top seniors from state title-winning programs, state finalists and a bevy of other contenders were randomized to comprise all four rosters, and the skill level was even across the field in both games.Reading senior Natalie Wall’s heart rate didn’t exactly climb when her Navy teammate Norah Bargatti (Westfield) tied the score late in the fourth quarter of their game, but certainly was pleased to be among the competition.“It’s low stakes, we just came out here to have fun,” she said, the d...

Bruins notebook: Players looking to impress special audience An 82-game regular season schedule that lasts up to seven months can hold its share of forgettable games and road trips. But a trip that every player seems to look forward to is the one that many teams have been doing over the past decade or so, the family-based road trip.Sometimes it’s the mothers of players who tag along, other times it’s the siblings. When the B’s boarded their flight Sunday for their two-city Florida trip to Tampa and Sunrise, the players had their Dads in tow.Not only were there smiles all around after practice at Warrior Ice Arena on Monday, the players usually get an extra boost once the games begin.“I think the motivation is they want to play well in front of their parents, but they also want to give kind of a thank you of a performance, a thank you to the Bruins for being able to do something like this,” said coach Jim Montgomery. “Because it really is special to spend time with your Mom or your Dad. Last year it was the siblings. Your par...

Sweet 16: Marshfield has its day

Sweet 16: Marshfield has its day Once the new MIAA football alignments came out, all eyes were on Div. 2 to see if a certain powerhouse squad was listed there.Sure enough, Catholic Memorial was one of 22 teams. That certainly irritated many schools who believed the Knights should have moved up to Div. 1 after dominating the Div. 2 scene the previous two seasons. Catholic Memorial captured the previous two state titles and won each of those eight postseason contests by at least 20 points, one of the eight victims being Marshfield. Thus when the tournament pairings came out this year, Marshfield found itself on the same side of the draw as Catholic Memorial. Few gave the Rams any chance of ending the Knights’ reign of terror, but they didn’t count on a group of young men from Marshfield rising to the challenge and stunning Catholic Memorial 52-40 to advance to the Div. 2 title game against King Philip.“Our kids deserve all the credit for this,” said Marshfield coach Chris Arouca. “They played really hard an...

There is light at the end of the tunnel, MBTA’s General Manager says Despite recent revelations that the state’s beleaguered transit system will require about $24.5 billion in investment before it’s in “state of good repair,” and ahead of a year’s worth of sporadic closures, the MBTA’s general manager nevertheless remains optimistic about the future. The hefty price tag required to bring the agency up to standard does not reflect money that will need to be raised immediately, GM Phil Eng explained, but does reflect the cost of providing a rebuilt and modernized transit agency. It will all pay off in the end, he said.“I wouldn’t have taken this role if I didn’t believe there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Eng told WCVB. “I am fully confident that we can, not only rebuild our workforce, which has been a big effort, but we can rebuild our infrastructure and we can rebuild it in meaningful ways.”Last week, the MBTA’s board of directors released a capital needs analysis and found that fixing the problems plaguing the T would cost $10...
