By MATTHEW DALY and MARC LEVY (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Large-scale clean energy projects from Pennsylvania to California have been selected by the Biden administration for a $7 billion program to kickstart development and production of hydrogen fuel, a key component of President Joe Biden’s agenda to slow climate change. His goal is to establish seven regional hydrogen hubs to help replace fossil fuels such as coal and oil with cleaner-burning hydrogen as an energy source for vehicles, manufacturing and generating electricity.Biden is expected to make the official announcement during an economic-themed visit to Philadelphia on Friday. The White House calls clean hydrogen “essential to achieving the president’s vision of a strong clean energy economy” and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. by 2050.“As a clean fuel, hydrogen complements the role played by other clean energy sources, like wind and solar, to help the U.S. reduce emissions in energy-intensive sectors ...Harvard president defends free speech on campus after students’ anti-Israel statement: ‘We do not punish or sanction people for expressing such views’

As controversy continues to swirl at Harvard after dozens of student groups blamed Israel following the Hamas terrorist attacks, the university’s president is defending the students’ right to free speech — even when it comes to “outrageous” beliefs.Harvard President Claudine Gay in a video addressed the chaotic week at the Cambridge university, where the student groups have been condemned and railed against for their anti-Israel statement after the Hamas terrorists murdered Israelis and took hostages. The dozens of groups in the statement entirely blamed Israel for the terrorist attacks.“Our University embraces a commitment to free expression,” Gay said in the video. “That commitment extends even to views that many of us find objectionable, even outrageous.“We do not punish or sanction people for expressing such views,” the president added. “But that is a far cry from endorsing them.”Harvard was recently ranked a...Flag football and cricket are among five sports nearing inclusion for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

SURREY, B.C. — The City of Surrey says it will file a petition with the Supreme Court of British Columbia for a judicial review of the provincial government’s order forcing it to continue the transition to a municipal police force. The city was in the process of reverting to the RCMP when the provincial government ordered it to resume the shift to the Surrey Police Service. The court filing is the latest in a series of years-long disagreements over which force should police the city east of Vancouver.Surrey was in the process of moving to the municipal force from the RCMP when Brenda Locke was elected as mayor on a promise to stop the transition. Mike Farnworth, B.C.’s solicitor general, ordered the process stopped earlier this year, citing public safety as a concern and noting the RCMP had 1,500 vacancies. In a letter advising Farnworth of the court petition, Locke says the city can’t accept the extraordinary burden that taxpayers will face because of the province&...Canadian women terrified for loved ones in Gaza as Israel orders evacuation

Canadians with loved ones in Gaza say they’re terrified their relatives will soon die now that Israel’s military has told about one million Palestinians to evacuate northern parts of the sealed-off territory ahead of an expected ground invasion. The United Nations has warned that an evacuation on that scale – almost half the Gaza population – could be calamitous and urged Israel to reverse the order. Hamas, which staged a brutal attack on Israel nearly a week ago and has fired thousands of rockets since, called on people to stay in their homes. For Montreal resident Dalya Shaath, the barely 24 hours since Israel’s evacuation order has been deeply distressful. “My family is dying,” Shaath said as she wept during a phone interview on Friday morning. “My one cousin sent me a message on Facebook saying, ‘Dalya, my love, I don’t know if I’m gonna talk to you again.'”Another cousin in Gaza called at 2 a.m. to say some family member...Stock market today: Wall Street struggles as war worries collide with hope for stronger profits
