Residents say cockroaches, mold and maintenance problems remain at East Bay complex

Residents say cockroaches, mold and maintenance problems remain at East Bay complex OAKLEY — One family at The Oaks sleeps with the lights on. Not because they are afraid of the dark, but because they fear the cockroaches that come out of their hiding places at night to forage for food – on the counters, table, chairs, cupboards and showers. Everywhere.Even after an exterminator sprayed their apartment this summer, the family, who asked that their names not be used for fear of retribution, was horrified when one daughter found an army of the nocturnal insects invading the kitchen when she got up for some juice one night.“When you spray, you agitate them and it brings them out more,” the mom said. “So it’s kind of a Catch 22. You don’t want more to come out. So what do you do?”The family has had to throw out many of their kitchen items and the bunk beds where roaches had nested. The couch also will be tossed as live roaches were seen walking across it, the mom said.“I have to get rid of the rest of the couch now because my daughter had one crawling...

49ers report card: ‘It was the way it was drawn up, which was sweet’

49ers report card: ‘It was the way it was drawn up, which was sweet’ PITTSBURGH — Here is how the 49ers graded in Sunday’s 30-7 season-opening win over the host Steelers:PASS OFFENSE: ATwo plays on the opening drive explained a lot about how this became a rout. First, rather than run on fourth-and-1, George Kittle caught Brock Purdy’s pass in the flat and charged 11 yards to the Steelers’ 34-yard line, which Purdy said went “exactly how we drew it up.” The other play: Purdy’s 8-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Brandon Aiyuk dead center of the end zone, after Deebo Samuel distracted the defense, which center Jake Brendel described as “the way it was drawn up, which was sweet.” To summarize, the 49ers had months to prepare and practice for this opening drive, and they executed it into a 7-0 lead to neuter a hostile environment. Purdy (19-of-29, 220 yards, two touchdowns; 20 rushing yards) showed last season was no fluke and his elbow is no problem. Aiyuk had eight receptions on eight targets for...

Elon Musk’s X sues California over content moderation law By JOEL ROSENBLATT | BloombergElon Musk’s X Corp. sued California over a law requiring social media companies to explain how their content is moderated. The company that operates the social network that used to be known as Twitter argues the measure, AB 587, interferes with its editorial judgments protected as free speech under the Constitution. When California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill last year, he said it was designed to protect the public by requiring social media companies to reveal their policies on hate speech, disinformation, harassment and extremism on their platforms, and report data on their enforcement of the policies. But the law’s true intent is “to pressure social media platforms to ‘eliminate’ certain constitutionally protected content viewed by the state as problematic,” according to the complaint.Advertisers have fled the platform since Musk bought it for $44 billion last year and started making changes, including reinstating formerly banned users and firi...

Defunct Sovereign Health to pay $11 million to settle wrongful death lawsuit

Defunct Sovereign Health to pay $11 million to settle wrongful death lawsuit Brandon Nelson was an outstanding student at Santa Monica High School. (Courtesy of the Nelson family) Was it lies and sins of omission that killed Brandon Nelson? The promise of a professional mental health team’s care — psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists — that turned out to include guys with experience in furniture moving and construction and credit card processing and house painting, who took online CPR classes, who were too freaked out by his body dangling from the ceiling to recall the address for the 911 dispatcher?Perhaps it was that the company was imploding financially and workers were fleeing. Or that the “facility” where Sovereign Health placed him was little more than a tract home in San Clemente. Or that no one “treating” him on that final day had any clue about his medical history, his psychotic breaks, his desire to die.The powerful anti-psychotic medications he required twice daily were slow to be filled and forgotten on a desk in a corporate office — Nels...
