On a late September afternoon, Chelmsford senior Kyle Wilder asked a question no 17-year old should ever have to utter.“Am I going to die?”Now nearly two months later Kyle is at home with a semblance of peace, using the same qualities that built him into a varsity quarterback to overcome a life-altering two weeks and find hope in his future.“Always believe and never give up,” Kyle said. “I always believed and I never gave up and I am here today smiling.”Kyle was always the quarterback of Chelmsford’s future. A commensurate role model for his teammates, Kyle is defined not by bravado or flamboyance but rather a calm, kind-spirited nature filled with internal resilience. His first varsity pass as a freshman late in the season was a touchdown. In his sophomore and junior campaigns the team went 8-3 and last year hosted a state tournament game. Yet his senior year never made it past week three. On Friday Sept. 22, Kyle made a rare appearance on d...Turn Thanksgiving leftovers into a knockout meal

Let’s admit that Thanksgiving Day leftovers, though familiar and comforting, are boring. But with the roasting, toasting and simmering already done, they make a blank canvas for the adventuresome cook.Leftover turkey is perfect in a hearty soup or stew, whether or not you simmer up your own stock. Take turkey pho, the gingery Asian noodle soup. It’s quick and light, a slurpable warming meal in a bowl (see recipe). My grandmother’s traditional stuffing is so fussy, I repurpose every crumb — top it with fried or scrambled eggs for brunch or turn it into a savory bread pudding. It inspired the mushroom croquettes (see recipe).Mashed potatoes, spiked with chopped jalapeño and topped with Cheddar, make a lush potato gratin. Add them to soups and stews to give them body or use them to top turkey and vegetable shepherd’s pies.Curried sweet potato bisque dispatches what’s left of the candied side dish. Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 18:08:21 GMT
The Biden administration is considering giving away ground-breaking American technologies to China, India, and other countries — yes, for free. This giveaway would ravage the small businesses that drive innovation in the United States, and crush the economy in the process. The give-a-away would waive aspects of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO’s) Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, or TRIPS Agreement, which sets global shared standards for intellectual property (IP) protection. Last year, with the Biden administration’s blessing, the WTO waived certain commitments in the TRIPS Agreement for COVID vaccines. Not a single shot can be attributed to that action. Now, the Biden administration may double down on failed policy, and potentially expand the waiver to COVID therapies and tests. An expanded IP waiver would have disastrous consequences for the life sciences sector, and by extension small businesses. The animated, centenary effort “Wish” might be one of the most self-referential films from Disney. This is the company that has asked fans to “wish upon a star” ever since “Pinocchio” (1940). Directed by Chris Buck of “Frozen” and Fawn Veerasunthorn, making her debut, and written by Jennifer Lee (“Frozen”) and Allison Moore, “Wish” is set in the mythical kingdom of Rosas, a vaguely Latin place in the Mediterranean Sea, where the inhabitants literally give their wishes to their leader Magnifico (Chris Pine), a rather obviously evil sorcerer, who stores the stolen wishes in bubbles in the ceiling of his tower, where his study and laboratory are situated. When they give up their wishes, the inhabitants forget what they were and feel an emptiness they can never fill. The strong-willed, rebellious 17-year-old girl named Asha (Academy Award-winner Ariana DeBose), who is about to celebrate her grandfather’s 100th birthday, is given a chance to become Magnifico’s apprentice. Asha...Lowry: In praise of the Pilgrims & their legacy
Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 18:08:21 GMT
The Pilgrims were unquestionably “settler colonialists.”As such, they are increasingly out of favor as Thanksgiving begins to suffer some of the erosion that has drastically diminished Columbus Day. Thanksgiving is too big a holiday to get dethroned, at least anytime soon, but it’s worth sticking up for the Pilgrims now accused of myriad sins. They have, no doubt, been simplified, airbrushed and romanticized over the years, yet that’s no reason to make them cardboard cut-out villains in a morality tale about the evils of European civilization.Theirs is a story of extraordinary endurance and faithfulness, in which can be seen glimmers of what would become a great experiment in republican government on these shores. The Pilgrims were so-called separatists who rejected the Church of England. Harried out of England, they escaped to the Netherlands in pursuit of the right to worship as they pleased. Then, a group decided to make the leap across the Atlantic. They did...Editorial: Beacon Hill spending sprees must stop

Spending other people’s money is addictive, and unfortunately for Massachusetts, our state Legislature is hooked. It’s with this understanding that we both applaud the business leaders calling on Beacon Hill to dial back expenditures, and fear that it won’t make any difference.“The drastic increase in government spending over the past five years is a growing concern for our future competitiveness and may detrimentally impact the long-term fiscal health of Massachusetts,” the heads of nine business groups said in a letter to Gov. Maura Healey and legislative leaders released Tuesday by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. As business leaders, they know that the actions of today affect tomorrow’s outcomes – the future of their companies and their workers depend on it. But for Bay State pols, today’s massive spending is but a precursor to tomorrow’s cash outlays meant to offset the damage.State officials are ramping up the fiscal y...Ridley Scott wages war spectacularly in ‘Napoleon’

Ridley Scott serves up dazzling spectacle in “Napoleon,” a historical drama about the French general played with comic and dramatic flair by Academy Award-winner Joaquin Phoenix. It’s hard to top a beginning that features a bloodthirsty mob cheering the guillotining of Marie Antoinette. How far are we from such horrors, one wonders?Scott, screenwriter David Scarpa (“All the Money in the World”), cinematographer Darius Wolski (Scott’s “The Martian”), production designer Arthur Max (Scott’s “Gladiator”) and the rest of the production crew have conjured up some large-scale military action we don’t see much these days. Soldiers in the thousands face each other across open fields. In the Battle of Austerlitz and an evocation of “Alexander Nevsky” (1938), Napoleon fires his cannons upon retreating Russians, fleeing across a frozen lake, drowning countless numbers, along with their horses. In the battle against the British occupiers of Toulon, a battle that earns hi...Turkey hash a perfect one-pot meal

What’s Thanksgiving without some leftover turkey? Even on those rare occasions when I’m not preparing the turkey, I still feel the urge to at least cook a turkey breast to have some leftover. This is a one-pot meal that tastes great the second day. Double the recipe if you have time and save the rest for another day. It also freezes well. Refrigerate or freeze the extra without the fried egg. Add the egg before serving. You don’t need to wait for turkey leftovers. You can buy roasted turkey pieces in the meat department or roasted turkey in the deli. Dear Abby: I am a fairly laid-back mom of a wonderful 13-year-old daughter. Her friends are nice kids, but some of them dress pretty provocatively. I have seen them wear super-short shorts that are very “cheeky” and tops that really expose their assets. We have been invited to a party at a friend’s home, and my daughter is allowed to bring a friend. The friend she has chosen to invite regularly dresses in very provocative attire, and I would feel more comfortable if I knew she was going to dress “appropriately” by my standards.I don’t know what to do. Should I talk to the parents? (Cringe!) Ask my daughter to tell her friend what the dress code is and to convey “Wear something that doesn’t show your butt cheeks”? Or must I ignore it and hope for the best? — Overexposed in Washington, D.C.Dear Overexposed: Many teenage girls let it all hang out in an effort to attract attention. I do not think you should talk to the girl̵...Latest news
