GLENDALE, Ariz. (WSVN) – A German shepherd was found scared and stuck in a canal in Glendale, Arizona. Neighbors called for help when they spotted the dog paddling back and forth trying to find a way out.“As soon as I heard the call I was like well ‘I’m gonna go to it’ because I have like seven or eight leashes in my bag,” said Glendale Police Officer William Downey. When Downey arrived, he said they first tried to call the dog, but then his fellow officer Eric Sorenson jumped in for the rescue.“Eric, he starts getting his vest off, his gun belt off and I’m like ‘I got these leashes, we’ll see if we can leash it,'” Downey said. But the dog was nervous and nothing convinced him to swim to the officer until he was offered a sweet snack. “I’m like, ‘I got muffins in the car my wife’s pumpkin muffins’, so I run over get the muffin, take the paper off of it,” he continued. The NBA will host the 2023 draft Thursday night, ringing in one of the most anticipated nights in recent league history as fans and teams await a potentially game-changing first-overall pick. Here are six things to know about this year’s draft.1. Who will go No. 1?This is the easiest answer in this year’s draft. This is one of the most-hyped drafts in recent history for one reason only: French 19-year-old Victor Wembanyama, who has been touted as the clear-cut first overall pick in the 2023 draft.Wembanyama offers a unique meld of talents — a sprawling eight-foot wingspan combined with fluid ball handling and an effortless range from behind the 3-point arc. He went pro at age 14 and began receiving high-level draft interest at 16 as he made a name for himself in the top French league. While Wembanyama’s towering 7-foot-3 height creates a clear advantage around the rim, his slender frame has been a source of concern for his durability against the physical compet...Russian mercenaries’ short-lived revolt could have long-term consequences for Putin

A short-lived revolt by a rebellious Russian mercenary commander ended with his troops beating a retreat, but the extraordinary challenge to President Vladimir Putin’s two-decade hold on power could have long-term consequences for his rule and his war in Ukraine.Putin’s image as a tough leader had already been badly bruised by the Ukraine war, which has dragged on for 16 months and claimed huge numbers of Russian troops. Saturday’s march toward Moscow by forces under the command of his onetime protege, Yevgeny Prigozhin, exposed further weaknesses, analysts said.It also meant some of the best forces fighting for Russia in Ukraine were pulled from that battlefield: Prigozhin’s own Wagner troops and Chechen ones sent to stop them. After calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister, Prigozhin and his fighters appeared to seize control of the Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don that oversee fighting in Ukraine. They then advanced toward...Russia, China pledge to strengthen ties after fizzled rebellion against Kremlin

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China and Russia pledged to strengthen cooperation on Sunday, a day after a brief rebellion by a Russian mercenary commander against Kremlin fizzled out.Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko made a previously unannounced visit to Beijing, where he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang to discuss “international and regional issues of common concern,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on its website. It was unclear whether Rudenko’s visit had been planned or was in response to a rebellion on Saturday during which Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of private mercenary army Wagner Group, ordered his troops to march on Moscow in the greatest challenge to President Vladimir Putin in his more than two decades in power. Prigozhin later on Saturday reached a deal with the Kremlin to go into exile and sounded the retreat.China has not officially commented on the crisis in Russia.Russia and China, while not formal allies, have maintained close ties throughout Moscow’...Teen boy injured after stabbing in Victoria and Dundas East area

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — When the International African American Museum opens to the public Tuesday in South Carolina, it becomes a new site of homecoming and pilgrimage for descendants of enslaved Africans whose arrival in the Western Hemisphere begins on the docks of the lowcountry coast.Overlooking the old wharf in Charleston at which nearly half of the enslaved population first entered North America, the 150,000-square-foot (14,000-square-meter) museum houses exhibits and artifacts exploring how African Americans’ labor, perseverance, resistance and cultures shaped the Carolinas, the nation and the world. It also includes a genealogy research center to help families trace their ancestors’ journey from point of arrival on the land. The opening happens at a time when the very idea of Black people’s survival through slavery, racial apartheid and economic oppression being quintessential to the American story is being challenged throughout the U.S. Leaders of the museum said its existen...Roller coaster derails in amusement park in Sweden, killing 1 person and injuring several others

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — An easyJet flight from the United Kingdom to Turkey was diverted to Greece early Sunday after two passengers became drunk, unruly and started shouting at fellow passengers and crew, authorities said. The two Russian passengers, both men aged 48 and 39, respectively, were arrested after the plane, on a scheduled flight from Manchester to Dalaman in southwestern Turkey, touched down in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. The two faced a prosecutor who charged them with disturbing the peace, disrupting transport and disobeying the crew’s instructions. There was no physical altercation, authorities said. After they were charged, the two men were released pending trial, which will take place in November and which they are not obligated to attend, but will be represented by their lawyers. Having arrived in Greece without a visa, they were led to a police precinct but were expected to be put on a flight to Turkey later Sunday. The Associated PressLatest news
