TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- A mission seven years in the making will be fulfilled on Sunday when a sample of an asteroid will land on Earth. NASA launched a spacecraft OSIRIS-REx in 2016. The spacecraft set its sights on asteroid Bennu. As the spacecraft approached the asteroid in 2020, a robotic arm reached out and took an 8.8-ounce sample of dust and rock off the surface. How will El Niño affect winter? New long-range outlook released The arm tucked the sample safely away into a capsule inside the spacecraft. OSIRIS-REx continued to orbit and study the asteroid for six months before beginning its journey back to Earth in 2021. On Sunday, as the spacecraft approaches Earth, the capsule containing the sample will be ejected into Earth's atmosphere. The capsule will deploy parachutes to slow it down and it is expected to safely land in the Utah desert where researchers will be waiting to retrieve it. A suspected car thief driving a stolen Jeep Wrangler smashed into a Grand Avenue pizza parlor and then crashed into a Ramsey County sheriff’s vehicle during an unsuccessful attempt to escape capture, St. Paul police said.According to St. Paul police Sgt. Mike Ernster, about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, police in St. Paul learned that a vehicle stolen in Oakdale was parked behind Toppers Pizza at 1154 Grand Ave.When officers surrounded the vehicle, it sped away, hitting a corner of the Toppers building and then striking a sheriff’s vehicle. The man driving the Jeep jumped out and ran. A female passenger in the vehicle was detained. The man was caught a few blocks away.After it appeared he was overdosing on narcotics, he was revived with Narcan and taken to the hospital for evaluation.Three people were ultimately arrested in connection with the incident. Security cameras captured the moment an ancient Buddha statue worth $1.5 million was stolen from a Los Angeles art gallery.The bronze sculpture was stolen on Sept. 18 from the Barakat Gallery in Beverly Grove around 3:45 a.m., officials said.Weighing 250 pounds, the artifact dates back to Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1867), according to gallery owners. A homeless man was arrested on Tuesday after he stole a phone from a man who was recording him and fled. Santa Monica police officers responded to a report of a battery in Palisades Park around 3:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found the victim on the ground suffering from injuries to his face and head according to a Santa Monica Police Department news release. Both the victims and witnesses say that while the victim was recording a video of Palisades Park, he turned his camera and began recording a homeless man who was lying on the ground in the park. The man became angry and demanded the victim to stop recording before striking the victim in the face and knocking him to the ground. He then took the victim’s phone which had fallen to the ground and fled the scene. Authorities located the suspect, Tyler Jordan Keating, along with the victim’s phone nearby.
