As the Taliban Hunts Prosecutors, Afghan and U.S. Lawyers Team Up to Bring Their Colleagues to Safety

When he took over as attorney general in 2016, Mohammad Farid Hamidi vowed to crack down on the corruption that had plagued Afghanistan’s political elites, including within his new office. For months, he spent his Mondays meeting with any resident seeking legal counsel, earning a reputation as the “people’s prosecutor.” And he increased the number of women on his staff of 6,000 prosecutors from under three percent to 23 percent, before resigning amid political pressure in early 2021.But his greatest challenge came six months later, when the Taliban seized back control of Afghanistan, two years ago this month. Since then, the Taliban have shut down the attorney general’s office and freed thousands of people who had been locked up, sending many former prosecutors into hiding. Targeted by the people they helped convict, some 29 prosecutors have been killed in the last two years, including three in the last two weeks. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Syria has agreed to keep two crossings open from Turkey to its rebel-held northwest for the delivery of aid for another three months, the United Nations announced Tuesday. The U.N. “greatly welcomes” the Syrian government’s decision to keep the Bab al-Salameh and al-Rai border crossings open until Nov. 13, U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said. But the most convenient crossing to the area, Bab al-Hawa, remains closed, though Haq said the United Nations is in talks with the Syrian government and remains ready to reopen it if “obstacles” can be overcome. “We’re hopeful that we can do so,” he told reporters. The U.N. Security Council failed to adopt either of two rival resolutions on July 11 to authorize further deliveries through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, which had been used to deliver 85% of aid to Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib. It is home to about 4.1 million people, many of whom have been forced from their homes during the 12-year civil war, which ...One of the few competitions in Seahawks camp has Evan Brown leading race to become starting center

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Evan Brown hasn’t been handed anything during his time in the NFL.He’s had to earn every minute of playing time in his five-year career, and going into his first season with the Seattle Seahawks it appears Brown may finally get the chance to start the season at his preferred position of center.“Evan is ahead. He’s ahead just because of his experience, and if we were playing today, he would go first,” coach Pete Carroll said. Brown is involved in one of the few competitions in Seattle’s camp. The Seahawks selected Olu Oluwatimi from Michigan in the draft after he won the Rimington and Outland trophies in his one season with the Wolverines. Oluwatimi may be Seattle’s future. But for now, Brown has the edge. After going undrafted in 2018 out of SMU, Brown played sparingly during his first three NFL seasons. He had brief stints with the New York Giants, Miami and Cleveland, but got his chance in 2021 with Detroit, where he started 12 games at cente...-US-Audiobooks-Top-10

One case involved South Street in Lawrence, which flooded to a point where an Honda SUV was almost fully-engulfed, left after initially getting stuck when the water was lower.“I came down right behind her, [her vehicle] died and pulled over, another little car kind of crept by and I just pulled over and sat there wondering what to do,” said Mark Gaulin, who drove up and helped the Honda driver before later getting stuck himself.A few miles away in Andover, another vehicle with a man, woman and child inside ended up stuck in the water after trying to use an exit ramp off of I-93 North.Bystanders as well as a 7NEWS crew offered help to the sedan stuck on ...Column: Ozzie Guillén, once in the middle of multiple Chicago White Sox firestorms, now stirs the pot from the outside

In a move that shows how most modern-day baseball owners view their broadcasters, the Baltimore Orioles reportedly took play-by-play man Kevin Brown off the air for pointing out the team’s difficulties winning games in Tampa Bay.The Orioles have gone from laughingstock to one of the game’s best teams since hiring Brandon Hyde as manager to guide a well-executed rebuild. Brown was simply pointing out how far they had come in their rivalry with the Rays, who are chasing the O’s in the American League East. But the Angelos, who own the team and part of MASN, the network that airs Baltimore’s games, have never been grounded in reality. So Brown quietly was removed from the broadcasts in the heat of the pennant race to serve his penance.New York Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen was among Brown’s peers who called out the Orioles for the move, which was widely panned across baseball. Brown, who has not commented on his situation, is expected back in the booth Friday...Mayo Clinic Minute: Breaking through radiation therapy myths
