SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors’ wait for Gary Payton II’s return could soon be over.Six weeks after he rejoined his former team via trade, Payton might finally suit up for Golden State this weekend.Payton scrimmaged Friday and went through a light practice Saturday, coach Steve Kerr said. He’s listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, meaning he’ll warm-up with the intention of playing. Kerr anticipates Payton will play under a minutes restriction.“It feels good,” said Payton, who also said Saturday is the best he’s felt since his July procedure. “I’m starting to feel like myself, I’m excited to get back out here.” Payton has been limited to just 15 games this season and hasn’t played since Feb. 8 as he’s dealt with what he called lingering pain from an offseason surgery to repair a core muscle — an issue that was flagged during a physical that put the four-te...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Texas coach Rodney Terry was not more than 20 minutes removed from a resounding win over Xavier in the Sweet 16 when he was asked about the next mammoth task during what is becoming an improbable run toward a home-state Final Four. How do you slow down Nijel Pack and high-scoring Miami?“You’re not going to let me enjoy this for one night, huh?” Terry replied. He was joking, of course. Terry and his second-seeded Longhorns — the best seed left in an upset-filled NCAA Tournament — have been savoring every moment of March Madness. It began two weeks ago with a run through Kansas to the Big 12 Tournament title on the same floor inside T-Mobile Center, and with a win over the No. 5 seed Hurricanes on Sunday night, it would end with a trip to Houston and Texas’ first Final Four appearance in 20 years.“This has been a very resilient team all year long,” said Terry, the longtime assistant who epitomized that resolve by keeping the Longhorns together after c...

With Luis Severino injured, the Yankees may need to tap even further into their starting pitching depth early this season. With Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas already out to start the year, Severino is dealing with a low-grade lat strain on his right side. The injury will keep Severino from making what would have been his first start of the season and will “probably” land him on the injured list, according to Aaron Boone. The manager added that, should the Yankees require a fifth starter during Severino’s absence, Jhony Brito could join the rotation. Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt, who is now scheduled to start the second game of the season, are already filling in for Rodon and Montas.Brito, the Yanks’ 27th-best prospect, will start against the Blue Jays on Sunday in what was supposed to be Severino’s final spring training outing. A 25-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic, Brito owns a 3.52 ERA, seven strikeouts and zero walks over 7.2 innings ...
