Biden awards $7B for clean hydrogen hubs across the country The Biden administration has selected clean-energy projects from Pennsylvania to California for a $7 billion program to kickstart development and production of hydrogen fuel, a key component of President Joe Biden’s agenda to slow climate change.Biden called clean hydrogen essential to his vision of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. by 2050. His goal is to establish seven regional hubs to help replace fossil fuels such as coal and oil with cleaner-burning hydrogen as an energy source for vehicles, manufacturing and generating electricity. The seven hubs, which include projects in 16 states, will spur more than $40 billion in private investment and create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs, many of them union positions, Biden said Friday at a cargo terminal in Philadelphia, where one of the hubs will be based. He called the announcement transformational and said it would help create “a stronger, energy-secure economy” and combat “the existential threat of cli...

Toy industry works to build emotional resilience in kids following pandemic As more children emerge from the pandemic grappling with mental health issues, their parents are seeking ways for them to build emotional resilience. And toy companies are paying close attention. While still in its early phase, a growing number of toy marketers are embracing MESH — or mental, emotional and social health — as a designation for toys that teach kids skills like how to adjust to new challenges, resolve conflict, advocate for themselves, or solve problems. The acronym was first used in child development circles and by the American Camp Association 10 years ago and gained new resonance after the pandemic. Rachele Harmuth, head of ThinkFun, a division of toy company Ravensburger, and resilience expert and family physician Deborah Gilboa, formed a MESH taskforce earlier this year with the goal of getting manufacturers to design toys with emotional resilience in mind and to have retailers market them accordingly.“We just need to educate parents and educators just a little bit t...

Brief cloud breaks bring cheers from excited partial solar eclipse watchers in B.C. SAANICH, B.C. — Cheers erupted as brief cloud breaks gave more than 100 people who gathered at an astrophysical observatory site near Victoria, B.C., a peak at today’s unfolding partial solar eclipse.Calvin Schmidt, an employee of the Friends of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich, says fog and clouds were present for most of the morning at the mountain-top site, but there were moments when the skies parted and the partial eclipse was visible.Schmidt says those moments of solar splendor were worth the waiting though there are reports the skies were almost totally clear in some parts of Victoria, giving those residents a sustained view of the partial eclipse.Southwestern B.C. was Canada’s best place to view the eclipse. The event is known as a ring-of-fire eclipse, where the moon passes in front of the sun but doesn’t completely cover it, leaving a fiery rim around the dark moon.Environment Canada had forecast clouds and showers for much of southwest B.C. dur...

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh survives leadership review, but delegate support declining OTTAWA — Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has survived his leadership review, but support from his party is declining. During the second day of the NDP convention in Ottawa, 81 per cent of delegates voted in favour of Singh following his keynote speech. It’s the lowest confidence vote for an NDP leader since Tom Mulclair, who was rejected by more than half of delegates at the party’s 2016 convention in Edmonton. In 2021, Singh received support from 87 per cent of delegates and in 2018 he received nearly 91 per cent support. Some delegates at the NDP convention have been critical of the party’s confidence-and-supply agreement with the Liberals. Others say they would like him to take a harder stance against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 14, 2023. Mickey Djuric, The Canadian Press
