WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Voters in Poland were choosing on Sunday between the governing party and a coalition of opposition groups that accuse the conservative nationalists of eroding the country ‘s 34-year-old democratic system. Many Poles feel it is the most important election since 1989, when a new democracy was born after decades of communism. At stake are the health of the nation’s constitutional order, its legal stance on LGBTQ+ rights and abortion, and the foreign alliances of a country that has been a crucial ally to Ukraine after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.Supporters of the governing Law and Justice party say they appreciate its defense of Catholic traditions and its spending on retirees and families with children in the Central European nation of 38 million people.Law and Justice has also eroded checks and balances to gain more control over state institutions, including the courts, public media and the electoral process itself.Support for the party has shrun...NDP ready to campaign on pharmacare if it backs out of Liberal deal: Anne McGrath

HAMILTON — The federal New Democrats plan to make pharmacare a central issue in the next election if the Liberals do not meet the bar the opposition party has set for legislation to reduce the cost of prescription drugs. The confidence-and-supply deal that sees the NDP supporting the minority Liberals on key votes in the House of Commons says the government will introduce a bill to create a framework for national pharmacare this year.NDP members have drawn a line in the sand by passing an emergency resolution at their policy convention in Hamilton this weekend that says the party should withdraw its support if the Liberals do not commit to “a universal, comprehensive and entirely public pharmacare program.”The New Democratic Party’s national director, Anne McGrath, says getting a bill that has teeth will be her party’s biggest priority as parliamentarians return to the House of Commons following a Thanksgiving break. And that if the NDP ends up walking away fro...5 Canadians killed in Israel, Global Affairs confirms

Global Affairs Canada has confirmed the death of a fifth Canadian in Israel after a series of attacks by Hamas militants near the border with the Gaza Strip.Three other Canadians who were in Israel when the attacks happened last Saturday are still missing, officials said Sunday.Global Affairs did not provide details of the fifth person who died or those who are missing, citing privacy reasons.“We are very focused on addressing the cases of the three missing persons, who we continue to try to locate and bring back to safety in Canada,” Julie Sunday, an assistant deputy minister with Global Affairs Canada, said at a media briefing in Ottawa.Canada considers Hamas a terrorist group, and Canadian leaders have decried the violence it waged last week near the Palestinian territory. The government is still working to get up to 300 Canadians and their relatives out of the 365-square-kilometre coastal stretch, Sunday said, as Israel gears up for an expected ground invasion. The Wild flew into Montreal early Sunday morning in something of a bind, asking serious questions about a blue line that just days ago pitched a shutout against the Florida Panthers in their season opener. Before Saturday’s game in Toronto, Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters that his team couldn’t expect a replay of the Leafs’ 6-5, season-opening victory over Montreal because the Wild play a tight defensive system. But it was anything but in a 7-4 victory over Minnesota at Scotiabank Arena. After watching his team struggle to contain star wingers Auston Matthews and William Nylander, among others, Wild head coach Dean Evason said his staff already was planning on making changes before Tuesday night’s game against the Canadiens at Bell Centre. The problem right now is the Wild (1-1-0) have few options, which is probably why Evason characterized the changes as “adjustments with our pairs.”Spurgeon, who suffered an upper-body injury when checked into the boards during a presea...Top five Denver/Boulder homes sales for September all top $6M

The culmination of a conference on antisemitism in South Eastern Europe was a visit to the site of the Second World War death camp at Jasenovac in Croatia. But delegates had gathered in Zagreb with their thoughts dominated by the brutal terrorist attack on Israel a few days earlier, writes Political Editor Nick Powell in Zagreb. The Managing Director of the European Jewish Association, Jorgos Papadakis, opened the conference by declaring that the decision to go ahead at a time of “unfolding tragedy” in Israel showed strength and resilience, as well as support for “our brothers and sisters”. The Israeli Ambassador to Croatia, Gary Koren, said it was an opportunity to stand with his country and its right to self-defence in a war “waged upon us by the terrorist organisation Hamas … with the blessing of the Iranian regime”.The Ambassador said Israel had “no choice but to fight Hamas, to obliterate Hamas”. His country was attacking military targets, as defined in international law. “Israe...Latest news
